Dumbarton Oaks Museum

Project Overview

Dumbarton Oaks Museum, renowned for its historical significance and architectural splendor, faced a unique challenge: how to modernize facilities while preserving the site’s rich heritage. With aging infrastructure and escalating energy consumption, the museum sought a sustainable solution to reduce environmental impact without compromising historical integrity.

RIFE International’s partnership with Dumbarton Oaks Museum centered on a comprehensive energy efficiency initiative aimed at balancing tradition with innovation. Through meticulous energy audits and BEPS reporting, we identified tailored solutions to enhance energy performance while preserving architectural authenticity. By leveraging advanced technologies and sustainable practices, including energy conservation measures (ECMs) and building compliance strategies, we not only achieved significant energy savings but also contributed to the long-term sustainability of this iconic institution. A comprehensive report detailing findings, recommended EEMs, and implementation strategies was delivered to Dumbarton Oaks.

Customer Needs

  • Identified eleven ECMs, including replacement of existing chillers, boiler upgrades, controls for heating & cooling, lighting upgrades, installation of low-flow sanitary fittings.
  • An actionable roadmap for implementing EEMs was provided, including timelines, responsible parties, and funding strategies.
  • Recommended additional studies on re-lamping and water use reduction to further optimize energy efficiency.

Key Findings and Recommendations

The ASHRAE Level 2 audit at Dumbarton Oaks exemplifies how historic sites can effectively bridge the gap between preservation and sustainability. By adopting energy-efficient practices, Dumbarton Oaks not only enhances its operational efficiency but also demonstrates leadership in sustainable heritage management. This project underscores the estate’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint while maintaining the historical and cultural significance that makes Dumbarton Oaks a treasured landmark.

RIFE Solutions
