Project Overview

The Smithsonian Institution (SI) is a unique conglomeration of nearly 12 million square feet of space located within 614 maintained facilities and structures of varying size, age and architecture variety in 8 states, Washington, DC, and Panama, Belize and Guyana.

Since 2014, RIFE International has provided construction management and renovation and building improvement services for Smithsonian facilities across the country under an Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity Contracts (IDIQ). This project is still ongoing till 2025.

Facilities include 19 museums and the National Zoo which welcome nearly 12 million visitors annually; 9 active research centers with laboratories and dormitories; state-of-the-art storage and restoration facilities for one-of-a-kind treasures of artistic, historical, and scientific significance; and venues for public and private gatherings.

Customer Needs

The Smithsonian Institution welcomes between 400-1200 visitors daily at its facilities. This poses a challenge with scheduling maintenance and still have the place open to the public. The client wanted a committed and innovative contractor to perform technical and engineering studies in the areas of facilities/plant design & construction management, planning, real estate management, facilities maintenance, technology and information analysis, security, occupational safety and health, fire safety and environmental management.

RIFE Solutions

Our scope of work included construction services for plumbing, HVAC, construction repairs, renovations and restorations of Smithsonian Institution museums, the national zoological park, and Smithsonian facilities located in the Washington metropolitan area, which includes the district of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. RIFE International provided high-level construction management services and oversight of entire project construction, budget and schedule for the client. These on-site construction management services for the construction of the project related Building Renovations, Structural Repairs, Energy Efficient Lighting Retrofits, Renewable Energy Program Development, Building Automation Systems Installation, Electrical System Repairs & Renovations, Museum Restorations & Exhibit Renovations, Construction Engineering, Building Protection Systems, and several other critical facilities functions.
